Dr. Higinio Fernández-Sánchez?
Dr. Higinio Fernández-Sánchez’s journey is one of resilience, advocacy, and global impact. Born in Mexico, raised as an undocumented immigrant in the United States, and openly identifying as a gay man, he has navigated complex identities and challenges throughout his life. His educational path spans three countries—attending school in the U.S. from kindergarten through community college, completing nursing and master’s degrees in Mexico, and earning his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta in Canada. These multicultural and multidisciplinary experiences have shaped his understanding of migration, health, and social equity, forming the foundation of his life’s work.


Mission Statement
Dr. Fernández-Sánchez’s mission is to create pathways to equity and well-being for migrants through research, advocacy, and direct community support. His academic work focuses on migration and health, particularly in HIV prevention and human trafficking prevention among diverse migrant populations, including LGBTQ+ individuals, migrants in transit, newcomers, and seasonal workers. As the founder and director of #YoSoyMigrante, a nonprofit organization, extends his advocacy beyond academia, using social media platforms to fundraise and provide essential resources to migrant communities.
