About

Equity in Migration and Health Policies and Practices

Dr. Fernández-Sánchez leads this research program where he examines the complex intersections of migration, health, and social justice. His work focuses on understanding the unique health needs and experiences of diverse migrant populations through critical ethnographic and participatory methodologies. His research sheds light on issues such as sexual health, HIV prevention, Human trafficking prevention, gender norms, and the structural challenges that migrants face in accessing equitable health care. The program aims to inform policies and practices that promote health equity for migrants at local, national, and international levels.

#YoSoyMigrante Nonprofit

Beyond academia, Dr. Fernández-Sánchez's commitment to social justice is realized through #YoSoyMigrante, a grassroots nonprofit organization. This initiative focuses on direct advocacy, resource mobilization, and support for migrants in transit and resettlement. Through efforts like donation campaigns, community resource guides, and public education, #YoSoyMigrante addresses the immediate needs of migrants while amplifying their voices. Unlike his research program, which is data-driven and policy-focused, #YoSoyMigrante prioritizes immediate action and community empowerment.

A Unified Vision with Distinct Pathways

While distinct in approach, both arms of Dr. Fernández-Sánchez’s work are united by a shared goal: improving the lives of migrants and promoting their rights and dignity. This webpage serves as a bridge to explore his scientific contributions and advocacy efforts, highlighting how research and grassroots action can work together to create meaningful change.

Thank you for visiting and joining in the journey toward equity, health, and justice for migrants.

I acknowledge that I am located on Indigenous land, specifically the Atakapa-Ishak, Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan, the Sana band of the Tonkawa tribe, and Karankawa nations, whose presence continues to enrich our vibrant community.  As a migrant, I feel privileged to share this land and respect the histories, languages, and cultures.
